Families of children with food allergies know that this invisible condition requires constant vigilance. The necessity of keeping these children safe cannot be overstated; however, their emotional well-being is equally important. Food is used in almost every type of celebration, and is often a focal point of these events. Even in day-to-day life, food is everywhere. Children who have food allergies may be excluded from many of these activities. Some seem to take it in stride, while others feel varying degrees of sadness, anger, or fear. This book was meant to shed light on the emotional side and to help children cope with these challenges. It also serves as a reminder that even though this condition must be managed on a daily basis, it need not stop them from enjoying a wonderful life and becoming everything they were meant to be. I hope this book will validate the feelings these children may have and encourage them to talk about them. It is also my sincere desire that some of the words and photographs will allow others a glimpse at the way that these children experience the world. Maybe next time, you will be one of the grown-ups who allow an allergic child to be "one of the gang!"

I bought this book for our two food allergic 8 year children. Our daughter loved that it is a book with real pictures. She also was thrilled to see Mrs Maine wearing an allergy alert bracelet in her photo which prompted us to look at all the photos to see who else was wearing a bracelet. Both children have looked and read the book again and again!

Great book!
»
My son is 6, with multiple food allergies, and he LOVES this book! You can tell that it makes him feel better about having allergies when he's reading it with me. It's very well-written, matter of fact, and reassuring for kids and the pictures are wonderful to see too.
We have a bunch of allergy books geared towards kids, and if your child is struggling emotionally at all with having allergies, this is the best book I've come across so far! I highly recommend it!

My child wants to read it all the time!

Since this book has been on our shelves my food allergic son son makes daily requests for me to read it to him. He identifies with certain pictures and the text is spot on. Gina Clowes understands exactly how her readers feel and expresses their thoughts with finesse and clarity. While reading, my son and I talk about how it feels to see so many things you can't have. The overall messages are validating and inspire dialogue. I can't say enough.

MUST HAVE BOOK
»
This book is so well done. It is exactly what we have been looking for, as it puts it on the child's level and makes them feel as special as they are. My son noticed the boy on the cover had a bracelet like him and his face lit up! He loves it. It truly is a must have if you have a child with food allergies.

Food allergy mom loves this book!!!

I bought this book last week for my food allergic three-year-old daughter and have read it at least six times every day since! Even at a young age, she recognizes that she is not always able to eat what other people are eating. She loves "One of the Gang" because she can relate to the situations and feelings of the children in the pictures. As a parent this book reminds me that there is more to food allergies then just the medical side, but also an emotional side for my child. Cheers to Mrs Clowes for showing our children that they are not alone and that food allergies do not have to hold them back!
